Photographs are both object and image. This inherent duality continues to be a catalyst for debate with regard to how photographs are interpreted, understood, utilized, and managed in museums and archives. For this focus issue, we invite papers that address a broad range of activities involving the challenges of caring for and managing photographic collections. Approaches that examine the complex nature of photographs and activities such as cataloging, digitization, appraisal and processing, the creation of finding aids, exhibitions (online and on site), preservation, and access will be given consideration.

Articles might address one or more of the following questions:

  • How do current digital tools communicate the unique characteristics of photographic objects?

  • What role do catalogers play in translating the materiality of photographs into digital records?

  • What role does digitization play in a preservation and access plan?

  • How can digital tools enhance our understanding of photographs?

For this issue, we are seeking articles, essays, and case studies of 15 – 25 pages each. Authors should express their interest by submitting a 150-word abstract to the guest editor oarnone@eastman.org and the journal editor jdgsh@rit.edu by March 1, 2018. The deadline for submission of final papers is June 1, 2018.

Publication is anticipated for volume 14 with an issue date of 2018.
